A diversity of experiments exploring the translation of material and scale of a foreign and unknown utensil as a part of my final architecture thesis on curiosity.
Humans are curious creatures instinctively aroused by the weird and wonderful. My thesis project investigates curiosity as a fundamental condition of human development, and how it is provoked architecturally through our everyday experiences and material possessions. It explores the role of architecture as a multifaceted art for inspiring and orchestrating wonder, desire and discovery through an eclectic composition of influences and spatial sequences.
The project is located in Aarhus, Denmark and manifests as a Gift Shop that acts as a portrait of the complex and ever-changing human condition. Through an interwoven labyrinth of 5 rooms, the Gift Shop explores our identity through its Social, Cultural, Intellectual, Moral and Sexual components, offering an opportunity for residents of Aarhus to be curious about, and experiment with the uncertainties of ordinary life. It is the desire of the thesis to speculate the spatial identity of curiosity while utilising architecture as an explorative and social practice that provokes a world of fantasy abundant with possibility.
July 2018, myself and a small team of internationals spent 3 months building a classroom unit for a vocational skills centre in the village of Kassi Kunda in the Upper River Region of The Gambia. The building was designed as a case study project exploring Rammed Earth construction, where all materials and resources were sourced locally and physically collected by ourselves.
What proved to be quite a complex, yet incredibly successful build, the experience was both challenging and indescribably rewarding. The sheer hospitality and generosity from the local community allowed for an invaluable cultural exchange of unique traditions, language, cuisine and friendship.

The Aarhus Public Showers has been generated through a series of ongoing development drawings and physical models that investigate the tension and complexity that exists between a variety of contrasting everyday realities.
The project draws upon a diversity of filmic, literary, illustrative and artistic references for inspiration and architectural operation. Located in a back courtyard in Aarhus, Denmark, the public showers emphasise the subtle shifts in the seemingly ordinary materiality of the site to suggest at a hidden world beyond. It presents a duality between fantasy and reality - contrasted through the architecture itself and the programmatic operation as a method of illumination.
Overall, the Aarhus Public Showers aims to controversially engage with cultural themes of identity and belonging, while discussing relevant political and social conversations surrounding immigration and foreign integration.

Selection of models that range in scale and materiality that are used as operational thinking tools in the development of my architectural thesis: Tchotchke: A Microcosmic Gift Shop of Human Curiosity. The project speculates the spatial identity of curiosity, utilising architecture as both an explorative and social practice that provokes a world of fantasy abundant with possibility.

Located in the small picturesque village of Skader in Denmark, the project aims to broaden the perception of diversity and inspire the co-existance of a diverse community in rural Denmark.
